The boys of Boyfriend --- (L to R): Hyun Seong, Min Woo, Kwang Min, Young Min, Dong Hyun, Jeong Min |
I'm always game to review new acts when they come out. One new male idol group that has recently caught a lot of attention from a lot of people is the rookie group Boyfriend. These guys are being produced by Starship Entertainment, the same agency that backs up Sistar and K.Will --- which means they have a lot of starpower to back them up.
The 6-member male idol group, consisting of members Min Woo, Kwang Min, Young Min, Jeong Min, Dong Hyun and Hyun Seong, just recently released their debut mini-album and MV for their single "Boyfriend" last May 26. They've started promotions early for prior to the release of their album both through print and TV (they're debut is even being covered in a reality TV show!). With all the exposure, it's not surprising they've become instant stars practically overnight!
The mini-album itself is a great effort at breaking into the highly competitive music industry of Korea. It's composed of one vocal introduction, two main tracks, and two instrumentals. But before I even had a chance to review their album, I saw their video for "Boyfriend" last Thursday night... and I have to say that these boys are utterly adorable (most especially Min Woo hehehe)! To up the level of cuteness, they've even got identical twins in the group! I thought I was mistaken, but when I started to read on the group, apparently I was right since both Kwang Min and Young Min are just that. It's not just them though --- qll of them look like the kind of guy you want to introduce to your mother.
The song and the MV are typical of young male pop idols --- a song declaring a guy's love for his girl (say it with me again... "typical Kpop fare", right?).The MV matches the theme of the music by showing the boys in their fashionable best while they're courting a girl. The song is classic dance pop with strong eletronic-synth background music.
Not all male idol groups get the chemistry right to get noticed well enough. Boyfriend seems to have all the right things in place --- a bright sparkling and youthful image (check!), great fashion sense (check!), great vocal harmony (they're surprisingly good... check!), and great dancing skills (although the song is cheesy sugary kpop, you can see a lot of skill through the MV --- their synchronization is tops!).

Their second track, "You and I", was keeper for me though. I liked this track better since it was more current, and showed how the boys can switch from sweet-sugary kpop to eletro dance and hip-hop. I could appreciate their vocal range and harmonization with this single.

I'm definitely impressed with Boyfriend, and look forward to hearing more work coming from them. They're the complete package, and I'm pretty sure they'll be turning more heads and breaking just as many hearts in the coming years!
