The girls of 2NE1 (L to R): Bom, Minzy, Dara and CL |
UPDATE!!! (June 28, 2011 11:00am GMT +8) --- Although news and blogs report that the MV for "I'm The Best" was supposed to premiere alongside the release of the digital single, I usually don't hold it against Korean agencies if they release their MVs a day or two late from the single release. It allows people to appreciate the song as is so that they can see if the song is good on it's own, or it's really meant to be appreciate visually. In the case of 2NE1's new single, it's a double-whammy! Awesome kick-a** vid! See it after the jump!

It's been raining really hard here and Manila, and I had a really hard time getting to the office late at night. After a tiring day, there's nothing better to push away all the negative vibes than to write about a great song that's hot off the digital presses --- there's nothing hotter right now than one of YG Entertainment's biggest and most popular groups, 2NE1.
YG Entertainment has been carefully building up anticipation for their follow-up single after the hugely successful release of "Lonely" last month. They've releasing teaser after teaser this week for the release of their latest digital single, "I'm The Best". Sure enough, when the song was available for purchase online, 2NE1 hit the top of nearly all real-time digital charts in Korea --- true testament to the star power that CL, Minzy, Dara and Bom have established for themselves around the world!
I've mentioned that the YG Entertainment has been releasing teasers for 2NE1 since the beginning of the week. The four 10-second video teasers feature the girls singing very short segments of the song "I Am The Best". When I first saw on one of the teasers (the one for Minzy, I think), it was good to know that they're releasing a dance track this time around, in direct contrast to their last release "Lonely", which was a mid-tempo ballad.
Apart from the 10-second teaser vids, Dara has also been tweeting a lots of pictures through her Me2Day profile (which is Korea's version of Twitter), giving their fans a sneak peak of preparations being done for their comeback.
Since it's summer time in Korea, it's always best to expect upbeat and lively songs for kids to be able to enjoy while on vacation or when dancing in a club. "I Am Best" delivers that kind of intensity in the form of irrepressible electro-pop --- the kind that 2NE1 is known for (albeit the gratuitous auto-tuning happening in most of their songs, which I think is forgivable considering what the song aims to be). With strong hip-hop influence, and a beat that borders on being club-friendly (with a couple of tweaks or two), it's bound to be an instant hit.
As for the message of the song, well --- it says "I'm The Best", and you've got to expect that it's all about self-confidence. In terms of the theme of the song, this track shares some similarities to "Close Your Mouth" by SM Entertainment's M&D (Heechul of Super Junior and TRAX's Jung Mo --- if you haven't seen my review for that album, click here). The song simply demands for the inner diva to go on full killer-stilleto mode and stomp around (hehehe!).

NOTE: You have to give it to YG Entertainment for going all out for their MVs. They
are the masters of bringing on the "bling" content-wise! Awesome visuals and angles,
stunning sets, and utterly fabulous fashion! Bom looks fierce in that latex suit of hers
(or at least it looks like latex... thing looks like it was poured on her!)

Now that their new single is out, I begin to think "when's the album going to be released?" It's been a year since the girls have released their last full studio album, and I guess most of their fans are waiting in anticipation for a full release. Since I've started writing this blog, I noticed that most talent agencies prefer to hyper-market smaller releases (or the mini-album format, or as digital singles) to ensure sales. Once they've gathered enough material, they can re-release their collected singles together with new content, and just include bonus material to encourage sales (e.g. photo albums, journals, etc.). It increases the shelf life and profitability of their songs.
All-in-all, with this release, YG Entertainment and 2NE1 has proven that they have mastered their market. "Lonely", their last release, is still charting in most music sites like Soompi.com (you can check June Week 3 by clicking here). I know all the Blackjacks out there are excited for a full album, but I guess we can all be happy that they've got a great new song out there for us to enjoy!
